Summary

Everything stays the same for the tenants of The Beresford, a grand old apartment building just outside the city…until the doorbell rings… Will Carver returns with an eerie, deliciously and uncomfortably dark standalone thriller。

Just outside the city—any city, every city—is a grand, spacious, but affordable apartment building called The Beresford。 There’s a routine at The Beresford。 For Mrs。 May, every day’s the same: a cup of cold, black coffee in the morning, pruning roses, checking on her tenants, wine, prayer, and an afternoon nap。 She never leaves the building。

Abe Schwartz also lives at The Beresford。 His housemate, Sythe, no longer does。 Because Abe just killed him。 In exactly sixty seconds, Blair Conroy will ring the doorbell to her new home and Abe will answer the door。 They will become friends。 Perhaps lovers。 And, when the time comes for one of them to die, as is always the case at The Beresford, there will be sixty seconds to move the body before the next unknowing soul arrives at the door。 Because nothing changes at The Beresford, until the doorbell rings…

Eerie, dark, superbly twisted and majestically plotted, The Beresford is the stunning standalone thriller from one of crime fiction’s most exciting names。

I enjoyed Reading this book, although it took quite a while to hook me in。 The first few pages set the seen on what seems to be a very ordinary apartment building, where a murder has taken place。 As relationships develop it seems that the narrative will go down one particular route。 However the further you read we see that is not the case。 The plot twists and thickens, making the reader try and second guess outcomes。 I was very much reminded of Stephen King’s The Shining whilst reading this book I enjoyed Reading this book, although it took quite a while to hook me in。 The first few pages set the seen on what seems to be a very ordinary apartment building, where a murder has taken place。 As relationships develop it seems that the narrative will go down one particular route。 However the further you read we see that is not the case。 The plot twists and thickens, making the reader try and second guess outcomes。 I was very much reminded of Stephen King’s The Shining whilst reading this book。 This book does come to a satisfying conclusion and will be enjoyed by anyone who likes a psychological thriller or mild horror (maybe)。 The characters are believable and interact well with each other。 。。。more

What a strange book! A very quirk murder or murders story!I have read some of Will Carver's novels so was prepared for something different。However, I couldn't decide whether or not this was meant to be a black comedy or a serious crime novel。The characters are a weird bunch, houses in the house made into flats, called The Beresford。Although the book flows well, with short chapters, and little interludes between some, I'm not sure that I would want to read it again。Recommended to read, but only once。 A very quirk murder or murders story!I have read some of Will Carver's novels so was prepared for something different。However, I couldn't decide whether or not this was meant to be a black comedy or a serious crime novel。The characters are a weird bunch, houses in the house made into flats, called The Beresford。Although the book flows well, with short chapters, and little interludes between some, I'm not sure that I would want to read it again。Recommended to read, but only once。 。。。more

This is the first book I have read by Will Carver and it won't be the last。He certainly knows how to keep you turning the pages, and gasping and squirming。 I loved the whole concept and had no idea how it would end。 It was one of those books where I didn't connect with or like many of the characters (I think Blair was the only one) yet I thoroughly enjoyed the book。 This is the first book I have read by Will Carver and it won't be the last。He certainly knows how to keep you turning the pages, and gasping and squirming。 I loved the whole concept and had no idea how it would end。 It was one of those books where I didn't connect with or like many of the characters (I think Blair was the only one) yet I thoroughly enjoyed the book。 。。。more

The Beresford Will Carver This was my first book by this author, and I loved it。 I could not work out what was happening, and I loved that! I loved the characters, the setting and the storyline。 Mrs May is eccentric, people keep dying in the building she owns, yet new people just take their place。 I found myself smirking at how clever the writing is in this book, and thats always a good sign for me。 I was totally absorbed in this book as I read it, and I loved every minute。

This is one of the strangest books I’ve ever read, and I mean that in a good way。 The twists and turns and the unexpected happen from the very beginning, keeping you guessing until the very end。 It was chilling, light, and darkly funny。 This is a book I will remember for a long time。

The Beresford。 Cheap accommodation, a place of your own with a dear landlady Mrs May。 What could be better? People apparently come and go fairly regularly。 But there are secrets about this place。 This felt a strange read。 The chapters were so short but as one read through the novel one realised why。 It was relevant in its own way to the characters and the storyline。 But nothing is as it seems and dastardly things seem to be afoot。

There’s nothing quite like a Will Carver book, this standalone isn’t quite as wash your mind out after reading it as the Pace books, but it's still very dark。 Set in an apartment block, the tenants have a habit of disappearing; if I say anything else it would be a spoiler。 It would make a great Tarintino-esque film。 There’s nothing quite like a Will Carver book, this standalone isn’t quite as wash your mind out after reading it as the Pace books, but it's still very dark。 Set in an apartment block, the tenants have a habit of disappearing; if I say anything else it would be a spoiler。 It would make a great Tarintino-esque film。 。。。more

This was a strange one。 I didn’t not enjoy it but on the other hand, I was a bit confused! It had my brain working and wondering what the hell was going to happen next but the element of pure weirdness dampened down any true enjoyment I felt for the story or any of the characters。 I need a book I can really get behind and fantasy always alienated me and that fell into this territory a bit too much for me。

The Beresford is a grandiose apartment block that’s very cheaply priced。 It’s run by Mrs May, why is it cheap? Why do tenants keep disappearing? How do they get replaced so quickly? The story is dark and frightening in parts which include domestic violence and the dumping of bodies, but, this is a book the likes I have never read before and likely never will again (not because it was bad but unique)。Well worth a read

Well, this novel has me shaking my head trying to figure out what the hell I’d just read… it was creepy, it was weird, and it was filled with dark humour that kept me flicking through the pages。This fabulous story helped pass the time in the wee hours when the insomnia kicked in, and my companions, the residents of The Beresford were just odd enough to keep me awake, rather than send me into deep sleep。 What a great read!

Carver does it again! Probably the best novel I’ve read thus far in 2021。 Gallows humor, rich characterization & lots of bloodshed。 Carver writes exactly what he wants to write and says exactly what he wants to say。 5/5 Highly recommended

Although this book can be classified as a horror novel if you want to slot it into a genre, I was more attracted to the dark humour that the narrator uses so frequently in order to convey truths that are ghastly, really。 This is not the darkest book I've read by Will Carver, despite its frank and unvarnished descriptions of murders and the disposal of bodies, and at the end of the day it's the central concept of The Beresford (and its landlady) that answers the question of why and wherefore, rat Although this book can be classified as a horror novel if you want to slot it into a genre, I was more attracted to the dark humour that the narrator uses so frequently in order to convey truths that are ghastly, really。 This is not the darkest book I've read by Will Carver, despite its frank and unvarnished descriptions of murders and the disposal of bodies, and at the end of the day it's the central concept of The Beresford (and its landlady) that answers the question of why and wherefore, rather than the question of what takes place, that piqued my interest。 I really enjoyed reading this, the psychological profiles of the motley crew of individuals, the things that they told themselves, and the comforting lies that they spun in order to make their world a more bearable and liveable place for them to exist in。 I really enjoyed this, would definitely recommend it, and am really looking forward to reading other books by this author。 。。。more

The Beresford sounds like one of those buildings that you might come across in many towns and pass it by without a second glance。 This building is home to a "hotch-potch" of individuals, each with their own strange backgrounds, from the owner whom every morning makes a large jug of coffee for her only to drink it cold throughout the day as she spends the daytime hours pruning her roses, each and every day。 To a young girl (Blair) at her first ever home away from her religious parents to Abe whom The Beresford sounds like one of those buildings that you might come across in many towns and pass it by without a second glance。 This building is home to a "hotch-potch" of individuals, each with their own strange backgrounds, from the owner whom every morning makes a large jug of coffee for her only to drink it cold throughout the day as she spends the daytime hours pruning her roses, each and every day。 To a young girl (Blair) at her first ever home away from her religious parents to Abe whom you just wouldn't ever want to meet, with his strange rituals and finding out how to get rid of a dead body, and these are just the start of a run of residents who arrive and may never leave of their own accord。 But then as one person is dead another resident turns up to take on their room, but for how long! Who will survive "The Beresford "?A rather disturbing story that spans the lives of the residents of the Beresford, its a dark tale with disturbing and creepy images that dwell in your head。 You will know if you have read a book by Will Carver before that you are in for a shocking read, but you just have to keep reading to find out the outcome and this book is no exception, its extremely dark, twisted and horrific。 You try to sort out in your head why? I've read a couple of books by Will Carver now and I've always come to expect the unexpected while reading his novels and The Beresford is no different。The Beresford is written in Will Carver's signature style, dark, a little gruesome, underlined by a cynical tone and sharp wit。 I love the fact that the characters seem so ordinary and lifelike, like you'd know someone who's similar or you could imagine passing one of them in the street but each one is compelling in their own way。The Beresford is I've read a couple of books by Will Carver now and I've always come to expect the unexpected while reading his novels and The Beresford is no different。The Beresford is written in Will Carver's signature style, dark, a little gruesome, underlined by a cynical tone and sharp wit。 I love the fact that the characters seem so ordinary and lifelike, like you'd know someone who's similar or you could imagine passing one of them in the street but each one is compelling in their own way。The Beresford is almost like a character in itself even though it's only a building。 It's owned and run by the elderly Mrs May。 It's an old and imposing building but the rent is cheap so there's always a line of willing people to rent a flat there, even though the turnover rate of renters there is incredibly high。While there is an air of mystery, (I mean why do the residents keep murdering each other???), I'd say this is more out-and-out horror than Will Carver's usual horror/mystery novels。 I'd still recommend it if you loved his previous books。The Beresford is Gothic, creepy and more than a little unsettling yet still keeps you glued to those pages。 。。。more

I didn’t love it quite as much as Nothing Important Happened Today, which remains my favourite Will Carver book, but I found this much-anticipated book a fantastic read and highly recommend it to those looking for something compulsively gripping and very different。 。。。more
